The Craftsman remote control wet-dry shop vacuum is one of the few remote controlled vacuum cleaners that the company makes. What are the pros and cons of this Craftsman brand wet/dry vacuum cleaner?
Pros of the Craftsman Remote Control Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum
This remote control wet/dry vacuum is quite affordable. It costs around $110 at full price. One sale, it can be found for less than a hundred dollars.
This wet/dry vacuum can double as a blower.
This shop vacuum is quite compact. It is about 20” tall and 14” in diameter. This means it can sit on your workbench or fit in the car as you are cleaning. It can be mounted to the wall to save even more precious countertop real estate.
The hose is more than 20 feet long and has a good 2” diameter. And this is in addition to the 21 foot power cord. You can set it in one location and clean your entire workbench or detail nearly any vehicle with it. The ability to turn off the vacuum cleaner via remote control instead of having to exit the vehicle, cross the garage and turn it off is often a selling point for this wet/dry vacuum.
The wet/dry vacuum comes with a whole set of attachments, including two extension wands. The attachments can be stored in a bag that comes with the vacuum. It doesn’t have every accessory for detailing your car but can tackle almost any type of cleaning short of scrubbing the set in stains in the car upholstery.
Sears sells replacement hoses and extension hoses that fit this vacuum cleaner. Note that if you add an extension hose, you lose a quarter or more of the suction power.
The vacuum is relatively quiet.
Cons of the Craftsman Remote Control Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum
This vacuum may be designed for the workshop but it lacks wheels. The handle doesn’t make it easy to move into tight spots when you are trying to carry it around. Lugging it around when it is close to capacity is not convenient.
If this vacuum cleaner is used to pull in more than a few cups of liquid or semi-liquid mess, and the filter becomes soaked, and you have to take out the filter to let it air dry or else the vacuum will stink up and develop mold.
Observations about this Vacuum
This vacuum comes with a basic one year warranty.
There are reports that the vacuum sometimes starts randomly, though this could be due to wireless interference from other devices in the area. The greater concern is the problems some have with the motor dying after only a few uses, which can cost as much as a replacement vacuum cleaner to get fixed.
The 5 horsepower number is the peak suction, not its standard suction. While this vacuum is good for picking up crumbs, sawdust and minor spills, it can’t pick up the heaviest items like nails or wood chunks.
Don’t leave the power button on or else the remote can start to overheat. Put the remote in the middle, off position when not in use.
The Craftsman wet/dry vacuum cleaner is designed for use in a workshop while working well for cleaning most messes in your car. While it lacks the power for picking up the heaviest items you might spill in the workshop, it works well for blowing out dead leaves, sucking up sawdust and cleaning the little crumbs out of your car without a loud, reverberating whine.
