The AZ2002 Vertex DuoClean is Shark’s new top-of-the-line model, surpassing the Apex. This model features numerous improvements, including a larger dust cup, more power, a slightly lower weight and a wider vacuum path. However, the star of the show is its new vacuum head. While the dual roller system may look the same as other Shark models, some small tweaks have turned it into the best pet hair head available today.
The Shark AZ2002 is the Most Powerful Vacuum in the Shark Vacuums Range
Shark AZ2002 Power
This is the most powerful vacuum Shark has ever offered, and one of the most powerful vacuums you can buy, period. Shark’s HyperVelocity chamber reduces turbulence, making the most of the 11.8 amp motor’s power. This lets the Vertex effortlessly pick up debris and remove dust from crevices.
The Best Head for Pet Hair and Debris
The Vertex comes with Shark’s latest version of their two stage head. A soft rotary brush picks up small debris while lifting dust and large debris out of the carpet. A second roller with rubber fins makes a second pass to pick up the remaining dust. These fins are slanted, so they maintain constant contact with the floor. While most vacuums only work well on small or large debris, the AZ2002 picks up everything from fine dust to cereal. Both rollers stay on when vacuuming floors. The action of the brush roller polishes the surface as it cleans.
While most anti-wrap systems will still have quite a few hairs left on the roller, the Vertex remains virtually hair free. Vacuum a large, pet-filled house, and you may only find one or two hairs wrapped around the rollers. This makes the AZ2002 the best pet hair vacuum you can buy today.
Shark AZ2002 HEPA Filtration
The AZ2002 has HEPA filtration with Shark’s Complete Seal Technology. Most inexpensive vacuums have poor fit and finish, creating gaps where dust can escape before being captured by the HEPA filter. With this vacuum, the entire dust path is sealed, trapping dust inside the filters. As measured using the ASTM F1977 test for vacuum filtration effectiveness, the Vertex traps 99.9% of dust and allergens.
Shark AZ2002 Usability
The AZ2002 weighs 16.4 lbs, which is less than the Apex, but still on the heavy side. This makes it a chore to push and turn. If you have wrist or mobility issues, this vacuum probably isn’t for you.
The head has a 12 inch cleaning path, which is slightly wider than the Apex. The head can be set to three heights for floors, low pile carpet and high pile carpet. The dust cup holds a quart of debris, so you can do plenty of vacuuming before emptying it.
This is a powered lift-away vacuum. The vacuum cup, motor and filter are built into a pod that separates from the head, wand and handle. This turns the business end of the AZ2002 into a stick vacuum, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The controls are built into the handle, and the LED lights on the nozzle remain powered in this mode. The head bends almost 90 degrees from the wand, making it easy to vacuum under furniture. Unfortunately, the suction power is so strong that it makes the vacuum feel like it’s self-propelled. This forces you to constantly pull against the head, which gets tiring during extended use. Using the vacuum in its standard mode is more manageable, since the added weight of the pod keeps this movement under control.
The head also separates from the main body of the vacuum, letting you carry the pod around with just the cleaning wand. This mode is handy for cleaning up high and vacuuming stairs. The pod is heavy, but it has a flat base, so you can set it down as needed. The hose is 5 ½ feet long.
Most Sharks come with a 25 foot power cord, which is short enough to require frequent outlet changes when vacuuming a home. This vacuum has a standard 30 foot cord, which is enough extra length to let users vacuum several rooms before switching outlets.
Shark AZ2002 Attachments
The Vertex comes with three tools: a dusting brush, a crevice tool and a self-cleaning pet power brush. The pet brush has the same fin design as the head’s second roller, making it just as effective and wrap resistant. Like other Shark vacuums, you can’t store all of these tools onboard.
Shark AZ2002 Setup and Maintenance
The AZ2002 is packaged in lift-away mode. Snap the pod, wand and head together, and it’s ready to use in normal mode.
The brush rolls are self-cleaning, but debris will build up behind the soft roller. Cleaning is easy, since the roller pops out without requiring tools. However, it’s easy to miss since the dirt can’t be seen without turning the head over. Forget about it too long, and the vacuum will overload and shut off.
Most owners will need to clean the motor pre-filters every three months and the post motor filters every year. All of these filters are washable.
Warranty
Shark covers the Vertex for 5 years of residential use.
The new head design makes the AZ2002 the most effective pet hair vacuum you can buy. This head and the vacuum’s high power motor also make it a fantastic choice for cleaning bare floors. However, the extra weight can be tiring when you’re vacuuming carpets or using lift-away mode.
